Mick O'Herein - Resident Tattoo Artist of Pure Ink Tattoo Studios in Ledgewood, NJ
Mick O’Herein, known throughout the industry as Mick Metal, has built his reputation the right way—through years of dedication, respect for the craft, and standing shoulder to shoulder with some of the best to ever do it.
Mick’s journey began in 2003 in the body modification world at Stiehl’s, before finding his way into tattooing under the guidance of the late Shotsie Gorman. By 2004, he entered his apprenticeship, becoming Shotsie’s final apprentice—a title that carries both weight and legacy. During those early years, Mick was immersed in an environment surrounded by driven artists, learning not just technique, but the discipline and mindset that define a true professional.
After completing his apprenticeship, Mick went on to carve out his own path—owning and operating tattoo studios, first in New Jersey and later establishing Revolution Tattoo Co. in Pearl River, New York. His career quickly evolved beyond just tattooing, stepping into advocacy and leadership within the industry.
In 2014, Mick stood at the forefront of a fight against unjust tattoo legislation in New York. Working alongside other dedicated artists, he played a role in pushing back against laws that were passed without the voice of tattooers—ultimately contributing to their revision and approval at the state level. It was a defining moment that solidified his role as more than just an artist, but a protector of the craft.
His commitment to tattooing led him to the Alliance of Professional Tattooists, where he became a Board Member in 2021 and now serves as Vice President. Through the APT, Mick continues to advocate for safety, professionalism, and the rights of tattoo artists across the country.
In 2022, Mick carried forward the legacy of his mentor by taking over Shotsie’s Tattoo. While that chapter eventually came to a close, it marked a full-circle moment in a career built on respect and resilience. Today, Mick brings that same energy and experience to Pure Ink Tattoo, reconnecting with roots that trace back to the early days—working and training side by side at Shotsie’s alongside artists like Shotsie Gorman, Daniel Rosini and others who would go on to leave their mark on the industry. After years of carving out his own name, it all comes back around—right where it started, now backed by decades of experience.
Specializing in American Traditional tattooing, Mick’s work reflects bold lines, strong imagery, and a deep appreciation for the foundations of tattoo history. While traditional remains at his core, his versatility allows him to take on a wide range of styles, always with the same level of precision and intention.
Mick’s story isn’t just about where he’s been—it’s about what he continues to stand for. In an industry that’s constantly evolving, he remains grounded in the values that built it.
