"Brandon Barzano - Muscular Dystrophy" Event

March 2013 - 8th(1-9pm) - 9th(12-9pm) - 10th(12-6pm)

Brandon's Story:

Brandon was diagnosed with facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD) when he was 14 years old. Before being diagnosed, he was a normal, active boy who since the age of 7 had enjoyed playing soccer, baseball, and wrestling. Just like most kids his age Brandon had already begun talking about what his plans were going to be once he graduated from high school. He wanted to become a diesel mechanic so he could work on trucks.

At the age of 14 we began to notice that Brandon’s shoulders were starting to slouch after a few visits with doctors and specialist we had finally found out what we were up against. Once the shock of learning that he had “muscular dystrophy” subsided, Brandon still was looking at his career options with a positive outlook. However, over the last 4 years Brandon’s muscles, that normally hold the shoulder blade in place, have become so weak that they have lost their mechanized advantage. Due to the deterioration of these muscles his scapula is no longer stable and he now has a condition called scapular winging. This condition creates issues for Brandon when he tries to lift his arms above his head. This also limits the extension of his motion and the ability to hold his arm up for any length of time. Brandon also struggles to lift his arm up high in entrance of the body (called Flexion). An example of Flexion would be the motion used when reaching for a glass inside of a high cupboard or a book on a high shelf. Additionally Brandon struggles when reaching forward to access a facet or lifting a glass of milk from the counter. These movements are particularly difficult when they need to be sustained or repeated.

To date there are relatively few medical treatments for FSHD, and none are specific to the disease. There’s no treatment that can stop the progression or reverse the effects of FSHD, but there are treatments and devices to help alleviate many of the symptoms.
We have found one treatment that through an operation attaches the shoulder blade (scapula) to the back of the rib cage (thorax). This procedure has proven to provide additional range of motion as well as added strength. It will provide Brandon with the ability to live a better quality of life. This procedure operates on one shoulder at a time and will take several months to heal in between operations.
Unfortunately the doctor that specializes in this procedure is located in Chicago which means we will have to travel back and forth with each stay requiring a 7 to 10 day visit for each shoulder. There will also be a need for additional traveling for his follow-up appointments.

Brandon’s first procedure will be at the end of February or beginning of March. We are waiting for this year’s schedule to confirm the exact date from the specialists’ office.

Our family greatly appreciates any help that you can give to assist us with the extensive medical costs which are not covered by insurance as well as all the travel expenses we will be incurring.

Click here to listen to local radio station NJ101.5 talk a bit about Brandon and how we are going to help him out!

We don't know how we did it, but we got it done. And we got it done well. Thanks to all who helped, all who baked, all who brought coffee, all the meals the Flinchums bought even though we wished they would have let us buy, and especially everyone who sat down and got a tattoo. Big or small without all the tattoos getting done this event would have been a failure. BY FAR THIS WEEKEND WAS OUR BEST SINCE WE OPENED THE DOORS IN '06! And with a donation of over $4,000, we hope this contributed well and far to one of the greatest families we have ever met! All of us here at Pure Ink were proud to offer this charity event to such a great cause! By far one of our favorites! Read more about this in the local paper articles FOUND HERE!
